Wound Types We May Evaluate & Manage
Each wound is different, and not every category below will apply to every patient. Call our office at (520) 820-8971 if you are unsure whether your situation is appropriate for this practice.
Chronic Wounds
A wound is generally considered chronic when it has not progressed through the expected stages of healing within a typical timeframe. Chronic wounds often benefit from a focused, individualized assessment to identify the factors that may be slowing progress.
Diabetic Wounds
Diabetes can affect circulation, sensation and the body's ability to heal, which means wounds in patients with diabetes often warrant closer, more consistent evaluation. This is general wound assessment and management for patients with diabetes — it is not a podiatry or vascular surgery service.
Pressure Injuries
Pressure injuries (also called pressure ulcers or bed sores) develop when sustained pressure — often over a bony area — reduces blood flow to the skin and underlying tissue. They are especially relevant for patients with limited mobility.
Venous & Arterial Wounds
Wounds on the lower legs are often related to how well blood is circulating — either returning to the heart (venous) or reaching the tissue (arterial). Understanding which type of circulation issue may be involved helps guide an appropriate care plan.
Post-Surgical Wounds
Most surgical incisions heal without complication, but some wounds open, drain, or heal more slowly than expected. This service focuses on assessment and management of appropriate post-surgical wound concerns after your surgeon has cleared you for this type of follow-up care.
Traumatic Wounds
This service addresses non-emergency wounds resulting from an injury — for example, a wound that is clean, stable and not actively bleeding, but that needs ongoing assessment and management as it heals. This is not a substitute for emergency care.
Skin Tears
Skin tears occur when the skin separates from underlying tissue, often from friction or minor trauma. They are especially common in older adults and patients with thin, fragile skin, and they can benefit from careful assessment and appropriate dressing selection.
Wound Assessment
A thorough wound assessment is the foundation of individualized wound care. It helps identify the wound's characteristics and the broader health factors that may be affecting healing.
Dressing Management
Choosing the right dressing depends on the specific wound — its size, depth, drainage level and the condition of the surrounding skin. Dressing management involves reassessing and adjusting the plan as a wound changes over time.
